Wanted: Your Input on Employment Regulations

On 3rd October 2011, businesses were invited by the Government to take part in the Red Tape Challenge and help tackle employment related law, bureaucracy and red tape in the latest phase of the Employment Law Review.

The public have a chance to share their views until 19th October 2011 on more than 160 different employment related regulations on all aspects of the workplace.  Businesses can express their opinions as to whether they feel any of the regulations could be simplified, improved, better implemented or enforced, or even abolished.

Ministers are seeking views on a variety of issues.  Examples of these include the rules on collective redundancies, employment agencies, immigration checks, the National Minimum Wage and statutory sick pay, to make sure they are fit for purpose and easier for businesses to understand.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has published a consultation paper (http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/employment-matters/docs/F/11-1308-flexible-effective-fair-labour-market) that invites answers to the following questions, in an attempt to improve employment law.

1) How can we create the space for employers and their staff to manage their relationship effectively?
2) What more can the Government do to reduce the fear factor in employing staff, particularly the first member of staff that a business takes on?
3) What rights should be included in the set of fundamental employment protections?
4) Where do the processes required by the rules hinder the outcome that they are seeking to achieve?
5) What criteria should determine which rights are directly enforced by Government and which by the individual?

You can respond to these questions, and comment on employment law regulations on the Red Tape Challenge website: www.redtapechallenge.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/employment-law

Alternatively, you can write to:

Red Tape Challenge
Labour Market Directorate
Department for Business, Innovation & Skills
3 Abbey 1, 1 Victoria Street
London SW1H 0ET

Or email: redtapechallenge@bis.gsi.gov.uk

You can comment on any of the above issues at any point during the two year Red Tape Challenge, but it would be more beneficial to receive your comments during the spotlight on employment related regulations between 3rd October and 19th October 2011.
